Since March 11, 2020, when the World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 virus a Pandemic, more than 1-million cases have been recorded in the United States and nearly 61,000 deaths. These are not just statistics; these are families, friends, husbands, wives, and people we know.
South Central Conference (SCC), in compliance with state and federal health organizations, has closed its offices, churches, and schools to protect its members. We have urged everyone to practice strict social distancing and adhere to the sanitation guidelines that the CDC recommends. I praise God for the way the SCC workers and members have rallied to minister to their communities while caring for each other’s needs.
In recent days, the federal government has been urging the re-opening of the country and easing of the state restrictions on movement to save the economy and put people back to work. In some cases, the states re-opening actions do not comply with the Federal Government’s safety guidelines.
Some might say that many of these actions are politically motivated. However, after reviewing the situation, the Administrative Team of the South Central Conference agreed that we will extend its closure of the churches and administrative offices through June 6, 2020. The SCC Emergency Response Committee will make clear a specific date for each church based on the criteria that will be set. We are preparing guidelines and protocols for the re-opening of our conference churches, schools, and administrative offices and will communicate those guidelines as they become available.
Our priority is the safety and health of our members and the communities that they serve. God is with us! He will get us through this pandemic. Let this be our finest hour. Let it be a time of recommitment to God and sharing this gospel that we love.
